Wat Phra That Doi Suthep – Sacred Mountain
Temple of Chiang Mai
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the most sacred and iconic temple in Chiang Mai, and one of
Thailand’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Located atop Doi Suthep Mountain, about 15
kilometers from Chiang Mai city center, the temple offers a perfect combination of spiritual significance,
stunning architecture, and breathtaking panoramic views.
For both Thai worshippers and international visitors, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is considered a symbol of
Chiang Mai and a must-visit destination.
📜 History & Spiritual Significance
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was founded in 1383 AD during the reign of King Kuena of the Lanna
Kingdom. According to legend, a sacred relic of the Buddha was placed on the back of a white elephant and
released into the forest. The elephant climbed Doi Suthep Mountain, circled the summit three times,
trumpeted, and then passed away. This was seen as a divine sign, and the temple was built on that sacred
spot.
The golden chedi at the center of the temple enshrines the Buddha relic and has since become a revered
place for merit-making, prayer, and meditation.
